PITTOR INSIGHTS / CONTENT ARCHITECTURE
Build a topic cluster
people can actually use.
A practical method for turning a keyword list into a connected library of service pages and helpful resources.
A topic cluster connects a main page with supporting resources that answer related questions. The relationship should make sense to a reader. Search terms help identify demand, but they are not a substitute for an editorial purpose.
1. Define the commercial center.
Start with a service or product category your business actually offers. Write down the audience, the problem, and the next action a qualified visitor should take. This becomes the center of the cluster. For an SEO agency, that might be an SEO services page supported by resources about audits, content planning, and measurement.
2. Group questions by intent.
Separate learning, comparing, buying, and implementation needs. “What is technical SEO?” and “technical SEO audit services” are related, but the visitor may want different information. Some queries fit in one page; others justify a separate guide or service page.
Review existing pages before proposing new ones. If two drafts serve essentially the same purpose, combine or clarify them. A smaller set of distinct, useful pages is often easier to navigate than a large set of overlapping articles.
3. Give every page a unique contribution.
A brief should identify the primary question, intended reader, key points, examples, sources, and next step. Avoid repeating the pillar page introduction across every supporting article. Add depth where the reader needs it: a checklist, a worked example, a decision framework, or a clear explanation of tradeoffs.
4. Link according to the reader’s next question.
The main page should point to relevant supporting resources. Guides should connect back to the service or topic overview where useful. Related articles can link to one another when the transition is meaningful. Descriptive anchor text helps readers decide whether to follow a link.
5. Maintain the cluster as a whole.
Review impressions, engagement, conversions, and signs of overlap. Refresh outdated explanations, combine redundant pages, and add resources when a genuine gap appears. A publishing calendar should leave room for improving existing material.
Example cluster for an agency.
- Pillar: SEO services.
- Commercial support: technical SEO, local SEO, and ecommerce SEO.
- Research support: SEO/GEO/AEO guide and keyword cluster guide.
