PITTOR INSIGHTS / WEBSITE LAUNCHES
Your technical SEO
launch checklist.
A focused review for redesigns and migrations, from the URL plan to the first post-launch checks.
A redesign can improve a website while unintentionally changing the signals that help people find it. This checklist brings search considerations into the launch process. Adapt it to the platform, site size, and scope of the change.
Before development begins.
- Record important URLs, page purposes, and current conversion journeys.
- Review search and analytics data where available to identify valuable pages.
- Decide which URLs can remain and map any required changes.
- Define responsibility for content, redirects, metadata, tracking, and launch approval.
During the build.
- Keep production content crawlable through ordinary HTML links.
- Use a logical heading hierarchy and descriptive page titles.
- Check canonical URLs, status codes, and duplicate page behavior.
- Review robots directives and prevent staging restrictions from reaching production.
- Test mobile navigation, keyboard focus, form labels, and visible error messages.
- Optimize images and review scripts that affect loading or interaction.
Before launch.
Test representative templates, not only the homepage. Service pages, articles, category pages, and form destinations can fail in different ways. Review the redirect map against the actual new URLs. A redirect should lead to the most relevant equivalent page rather than sending every old URL to the homepage.
- Confirm HTTPS and the preferred domain behavior.
- Verify indexability for pages intended for search.
- Check sitemap content and canonical consistency.
- Submit test forms and verify where the entries are stored.
- Confirm a rollback or recovery plan with the hosting team.
After launch.
Check important URLs and redirects again on the live domain. Review server errors, broken internal links, unexpected indexing directives, and analytics continuity. Search engines need time to process changes, so interpret early movements with context rather than reacting to every daily fluctuation.
Where authorized, Search Console can help inspect URLs, review indexing, and monitor search performance. Field performance data may take time to reflect a new implementation. Combine those observations with direct testing of the live website.
What this checklist does not guarantee.
Completing the checks reduces avoidable errors; it does not guarantee rankings or eliminate all migration risk. Complex sites may require a more detailed crawl, template review, log analysis, and launch plan.
